NYC Tattoo Artist was started by Mateo Rivera, a Queens-raised artist who first became interested in tattooing through drawing, album artwork, subway sketchbooks, and the hand-painted signs he saw throughout the city. After years of working around New York studios and learning how different artists approached composition, client communication, and long-term tattoo design, Mateo wanted to build a practice that felt more personal. He believed clients deserved enough time to talk through an idea before anyone started drawing.
That approach still shapes the business today. Mateo works alongside tattoo artist Lena Park and piercing specialist Devin Morales. The team brings different strengths, but the standard is shared: listen carefully, explain the options plainly, and never pressure a client into making a tattoo larger, smaller, darker, or more complicated than they actually want. New York moves quickly. Tattooing does not have to.
